Penguins - "Linus for Non-Geeks" - Apps
& Projects |
![]() |
![]() If you've gotten this
far, you are no doubt up and running in the world of Linux and looking
for even more to do. Below are a few more applications that you might
be interested in installing. I've broken them into two groups: apps you
can download and install using APT/Synaptic (Chapter 10), and those
that require you to turn to the Terminal in order to install (Chapters
9 & 11).
You will probably want to check back here from time to time, as I will add more applications when I find them. |
| Synaptic |
Stuff
you can download and install via APT/Synaptic |
Gentoo: A handy file manager that allows you, among other things, to change permissions of a folder and its contents by simple mouse clicks alone. |
|
Cool Games: Clones of the very popular arcade games; LTris, LBreakout2, & LMarbles. |
|
Zinf: An easy-to-use (and read) alternative skin-able audio player that plays a variety of file types and Internet broadcast streams. |
|
Handy Personal Information Managers: A label design and printing utility, a todo list, and two address books. |
|
Odds & Ends: Two unrelated applications that didn't seem to fit anywhere else: an HTML editor (Bluefish) and a Metronome (GTick). |
|
| Projects |
Stuff
you install via the command Terminal |
XSkat: The best-known German card game. German or French suited decks; German or English interface. |
|
PySol: The biggest collection of solitaire card games you'll ever find. Even includes some games played with Japanese hanafuda cards. |
|
Jigl: A command-line app with which you can turn your image collections into webpages of thumbnails linked to larger images. Post your galleries to the Net or just use them on your own machine. Very useful. |
|
Jools: A nice clone of the Windows world's slightly Tetris-like game "Bejewelled." |
|
XMMS Cover Viewer: An XMMS plugin that downloads and displays the album cover for whatever song you are playing. |
